The Lord gave me a little illustration about my prayers the other day. It came in response to my seeking His help regarding a situation that needed His spiritual solutions that were beyond what I could do.
He began by reminding me of a dear man, a fellow Christian, who lives very close to us, who is one of those handyman types who have a gift for fixing problems in practical ways. This man is almost always available to help us with pretty much whatever needs to be done, such as when insects have started a nest in the corner of a window, or a light bulb is too high to reach without a ladder, or there’s a clogged drain or an electrical problem that we don’t know how to fix.
This man is the one we call on if we need help in carrying some heavy objects or moving a heavy piece of furniture. He’s our guy if we need to figure out how to replace unusual types of batteries, or to help us to understand complicated instructions, or to research some specific information. He even trimmed my hair once when no one else was available.
He knows how to do special cleaning projects. And when Peter isn’t available, he drives me to doctor or dental appointments. He sometimes acts as my eyes reading to me. He is willing and able, and happy to be available. He’s an all-around fix-it person who seems to know a little about almost everything.
So when something is out of whack and Peter and I can’t fix it or figure it out, or we can’t handle it by ourselves, we call on him. It’s so wonderful not to have to worry about these many little things that come up that can be bothersome because, even though they’re little, they can cause bigger projects to grind to a halt when those smaller things don’t work or we can’t do them without help.
Knowing that this person is there and we can call on him at a moment’s notice is such a relief. We don’t have to worry because I know he will take care of it for us, or make sure it gets fixed somehow.
As I looked to Jesus about a spiritual situation that seemed beyond what I could solve, He said:
I want you to remember your fix-it friend. You don’t worry that your call to him won’t be answered, or that what you need done won’t be taken care of. You don’t worry that your friend won’t find a solution to whatever you are needing in practical terms.
I’m your handyman in the Spirit. I’m your fix-it man for all your needs! I’m your electrician, your plumber, your restorer, your professional cleaner to renew your spirit when it feels worn out. I’m your pest remover to clear out anything that tries to infiltrate your life in a negative way. I play so many other roles.
Just stop and think of the spiritual parallels to the physical issues that come up in your life, and it will be clear that I’m there to solve the problems. I help you keep things working smoothly. I have the solutions to problems that come up throughout your day. I provide and supply. I’m there to answer your calls for help whenever you’re stuck with some dilemma that baffles you.
I’m able to sort out and untangle any situation that you can’t fix. I counsel you about problems and work to help you sort them out. And what’s more, you can know that you don’t have to worry. You know I’ll be there and I’ll answer every need according to My perfect will and plan.
I’m the ultimate expert in everything, so I’ll never fail or let you down, because nothing can ever stop Me or keep Me from ensuring that you have what will ultimately work together for the greatest good for you. You can have complete peace because you can depend on Me.
Your fix-it man in the physical is a gentle reminder to look to Me, your ultimate fix-it man. If you can depend on a human being to help you when you need it, you certainly can depend on Me. I never fail. I don’t get sick or have a medical appointment or go shopping and leave you to wait sometimes, unless doing so is going to accomplish something good in your life.
You can have great peace when you call on Me. I give My peace to you, beyond any kind of peace you can find in the world. You don’t have to be troubled, you don’t have to be afraid, and you don’t have to worry, because you can trust that I’m always going to be available for you, and nothing is impossible for Me.
Here are some beautiful promises from God’s Word that confirm what He says above:
“I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27 KJV).
“This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles” (Psalm 34:6 KJV).
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go” (Psalm 32:8 NKJV).
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 NIV).
“I will advise you as my eyes watch over you” (Psalm 32:8b GWT).
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV).
