イエス、その生涯とメッセージ：昇天（ルカ24:50

今回は、ルカの福音書の最終章の最後の数節を見ていきましょう。同じ章の少し前のところで、イエスが弟子たちに現れると、彼らは恐れおののき、霊を見ているのだと思いました。そこで、イエスは手足の傷を見せて、それが自分だと分かるようにし、また、食べ物を食べて、霊ではないことを示されました。そして、「聖書を悟らせるために彼らの心を開い」 たと書かれています。^[1] イエスはさらに、こう言われました。「わたしの父が約束されたものを、あなたがたに贈る。だから、上から力を授けられるまでは、あなたがたは都にとどまっていなさい。」 ^[2]

それから、イエスは彼らをベタニヤの近くまで連れて行き、手をあげて彼らを祝福された。祝福しておられるうちに、彼らを離れて、〔天にあげられた。〕彼らは〔イエスを拝し、〕非常な喜びをもってエルサレムに帰り、絶えず宮にいて、神をほめたたえていた。^[3]

ルカの福音書は、イエスの昇天で幕を閉じています。イエスは弟子たちを連れてエルサレムを発ち、3キロほど離れたところにある、オリブ山の東麓の町ベタニヤに行かれました。イエスはそこで、天に上げられたのです。

イエスは苦難を受けたのち、自分の生きていることを数々の確かな証拠によって示し、四十日にわたってたびたび彼らに現れて、神の国のことを語られた。そして食事を共にしているとき、彼らにお命じになった、「エルサレムから離れないで、かねてわたしから聞いていた父の約束を待っているがよい。」 ^[4]

こう言い終ると、イエスは彼らの見ている前で天に上げられ、雲に迎えられて、その姿が見えなくなった。^[5]

ルカの福音書と使徒行伝は、共にイエスの昇天を証言しています。

聖書解説者の中には、福音書の中でイエスの昇天について書かれているのは、ルカの福音書だけだと言う人もいます。マルコの福音書にも昇天に関する記述があるのですが（マルコ16:19）、この箇所はもともとのマルコの福音書にはなく、後世の加筆であると考えているからです。しかし、イエスの昇天がルカの福音書にしか記されていないとしても、新約聖書の他の著者たちが昇天のことを知らなかったというわけではありません。たとえば、ヨハネの福音書では、イエスがマリヤにこう語っています。「わたしにさわってはいけない。わたしは、まだ父のみもとに上っていないのだから。ただ、わたしの兄弟たちの所に行って、『わたしは、わたしの父またあなたがたの父であって、わたしの神またあなたがたの神であられるかたのみもとへ上って行く』と、彼らに伝えなさい。」 ^[6] 使徒行伝では、使徒ペテロが、「イエスは神の右に上げられ」 たと語っており、^[7] ペテロの第一の手紙には、「イエス・キリスト…は天に上って神の右に座し、天使たちともろもろの権威、権力を従えておられるのである」 と書かれています。^[8] また、使徒パウロは次のように書いています。

このように、あなたがたはキリストと共によみがえらされたのだから、上にあるものを求めなさい。そこではキリストが神の右に座しておられるのである。^[9]

キリストは、ほんとうのものの模型にすぎない、手で造った聖所にはいらないで、上なる天にはいり、今やわたしたちのために神のみまえに出て下さったのである。^[10]

イエスが天に昇られたことが、復活から40日を過ぎてからは出現することがなかったことの説明となっています。この40日の期間は、イエスの復活で始まり、昇天で終わるのです。ある著者は、次のように説明しています。

地上から天上に移るにあたり、イエスは他の時にされたように姿を消し、密かに、人目につかずに「父のみもとに」行かれてもよかったことでしょう。公然と目に見える形で昇天された理由は、完全に去ったのだということを、彼らに知らせたかったからであるのは間違いありません。40日の間、イエスは彼らに現れては消え、また現れるということを繰り返されました。しかし、その期間もこれで終わりとなります。今度こそ、最終的に彼らを去られるのです。だから弟子たちは、イエスが次にいつ現れのかと待つのではなく、他の方、つまり聖霊が来られるのを待つように言われました。（使徒1:4）イエスが去られた後に初めて聖霊が来られるのであり、弟子たちはその聖霊が与えてくださる力によって、宣教を開始できるのです。^[11]

昇天は、イエスの正しさを立証するものでもありました。それは、裁判の際にイエスがされた、「人の子は今からのち、全能の神の右に座するであろう」 という予言の成就です。^[12] イエスはそのような主張をしたために死刑宣告を受けましたが、昇天したことによって、イエスの主張は正しく、十字架刑は不当であったことが明らかになったのです。御父はイエスの主張を退けることはされず、御子は御父のもとに受け入れられました。イエスの昇天は、単にこの世を去ることではなく、天に行くことでもあったのです。

彼らは〔イエスを拝し、〕非常な喜びをもってエルサレムに帰り、絶えず宮にいて、神をほめたたえていた。^[13]

イエスが弟子たちを祝福しておられる内に天に上げられると、彼らはイエスを拝しました。弟子たちは、イエスが十字架につけられて墓に収められ、その数日後に生き返られたのを見ているのですから、そうするのも不思議ではありません。イエスが40日の間彼らと共にいて、教えと指示を与えた後、弟子たちはイエスが天に昇って行かれるのを見ました。それから弟子たちはエルサレムに帰り、神殿で神を礼拝していましたが、いずれ五旬節の日が来ると、聖霊に満たされ、「エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで」、イエスのメッセージを伝え始めることとなります。^[14]
