Easter Meditations
The events of the first Easter brought seismic changes to our world. God made a new covenant with humanity, one which made it possible for us to dwell with Him forever. His Son died on the cross for us, making it possible for us to be forgiven for our sins and become members of the household of God.1 Celebrating Easter is rejoicing in the fact that God loves us so much that He made it possible for us to be brought into His family. Because Jesus died and rose again, we too will rise from the dead and live with Him forever.
Easter is a celebration of the events, meaning, and significance of Jesus’ resurrection. Following is a selection of scriptures and songs about the resurrection of Jesus—the event and its aftermath, its effect, what it teaches, and the glory of it all. I pray this will prove inspiring for you in your celebrations of Christ’s resurrection.

And if the link doesn’t work at all in your country, try searching the name of the song in YouTube to see if you can find another option. All of the songs are contemporary, with the exception of Christ Is Risen Today, the lyrics of which were written by Charles Wesley in 1730. Some of the songs included are videos of performances, and others include only the music along with the words on screen. The words to all the songs are included within the text below. The renditions of the songs that are included do not always follow the song words to the letter.)
Opening Song
Long ago, He blessed the earth
 Born older than the years
And in the stall the cross He saw
Through the first of many tears
A life of homeless wandering
 Cast out in sorrow’s way
The Shepherd seeking for the lost
His life, the price He paid
Love crucified arose
 The risen One in splendor
 Jehovah’s sole defender
Has won the victory
Love crucified arose
And the grave became a place of hope
For the heart that sin and sorrow broke
Is beating once again
Throughout Your life You’ve felt the weight
Of what You’d come to give
To drink for us that crimson cup
So we might really live
At last the time to love and die
 The dark appointed day
 That one forsaken moment when
Your Father turned His face away
Love crucified arose
The One who lived and died for me
 Was Satan’s nail-pierced casualty
Now He’s breathing once again
Love crucified arose
And the grave became a place of hope
For the heart that sin and sorrow broke
Is beating once again
Love crucified arose
 The risen One in splendor
 Jehovah’s sole defender
Has won the victory
Love crucified arose
And the grave became a place of hope
For the heart that sin and sorrow broke
Is beating once again
Love crucified arose
The One who lived and died for me
Was Satan’s nail-pierced casualty
Now He’s breathing once again

Prelude
Shortly before His crucifixion and death Jesus went to the home of His friends, Mary and Martha. Just days before, their brother Lazarus had died and was already buried. Upon Jesus’ arrival, Martha told Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”2
Shortly after this conversation, Jesus was arrested, stood trial before the Jewish elders, was convicted of blasphemy, and brought before the Roman procurator Pilate, who condemned Him to death. He was severely beaten and was hung on a cross until He died, after which He was laid in a tomb with a large stone rolled in front of the entrance, which was guarded by Roman soldiers. Days later, as was the custom at the time, some of the women who followed Jesus brought spices to anoint Jesus’ body.3
First Reading: Discovery
Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed (Mark 16:2–5).
“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’” Then they remembered his words. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others (Luke 24:5–9).
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
“What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:13–36).
They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have” (Luke 24:37–39).
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things” (Luke 24:44–48).
The gates and doors were barred
And all the windows fastened down
I spent the night in sleeplessness
 And rose at every sound
 Half in hopeless sorrow
And half in fear the day
Would find the soldiers breakin’ through
 To drag us all away

 And just before the sunrise
I heard something at the wall
 The gate began to rattle
And a voice began to call
 I hurried to the window
And looked down into the street
 Expecting swords and torches
And the sound of soldiers’ feet

But there was no one there but Mary
So I went down to let her in
 John stood there beside me
As she told me where she’d been
She said they’ve moved Him in the night
And none of us knows where
 The stone’s been rolled away
And now His body isn’t there

We both ran toward the garden
 Then John ran on ahead
We found the stone and empty tomb
Just the way that Mary said
But the winding sheet they wrapped Him in
 Was just an empty shell
And how or where they’d taken Him
Was more than I could tell

 Something strange had happened there
But just what I didn’t know
 John believed a miracle
But I just turned to go
 Circumstance and speculation
 Couldn’t lift me very high
’Cause I'd seen them crucify Him
 Then I saw Him die

 Back inside the house again
 The guilt and anguish came
 Everything I’d promised Him
 Just added to my shame
When at last it came to choices
I denied I knew His name
And even if He was alive
 It wouldn’t be the same

But suddenly the air was filled
With a strange and sweet perfume
 Light that came from everywhere
 Drove shadows from the room
 And Jesus stood before me
With His arms held open wide
I fell down on my knees
And I just clung to Him and cried

Then He raised me to my feet
And as I looked into His eyes
The love was shining out from Him
 Like sunlight from the skies
 Guilt and my confusion
 Disappeared in sweet release
And every fear I’d ever had
 Just melted into peace

 He’s alive! He’s alive!
 He’s alive and I’m forgiven
 Heaven’s gates are open wide
 He’s alive! He’s alive!
 He’s alive and I’m forgiven
 Heaven’s gates are open wide
 He’s alive! He’s alive!
 He’s alive and I’m forgiven
 Heaven’s gates are open wide
 He’s alive! He’s alive! He’s alive!

Second Reading: Proclamation
By the apostle Peter:
You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached—how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name (Acts 10:37–43).
Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him … God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear (Acts 2:22–24, 32–33).
By the apostle Paul:
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born (1 Corinthians 15:3–8).
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
We fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
 And bled for us
 Freely You bled, for us

Christ is risen from the dead
 Trampling over death by death
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave!

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave!

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bow to none but heaven’s will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold You down
 In strength You reign
 Forever let Your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
 Trampling over death by death
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave

Oh death! Where is your sting?
Oh hell! Where is your victory?
Oh Church! Come stand in the light!
The glory of God has defeated the night!

Oh death! Where is your sting?
Oh hell! Where is your victory?
Oh Church! Come stand in the light!
Our God is not dead, He's alive! He's alive!

Christ is risen from the dead
 Trampling over death by death
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
 Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave

Rise up from the grave

Third Reading: The Effect
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9).
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3–5).
Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4–7).
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you (Romans 8:11).
He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again (2 Corinthians 5:15).
Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us (Romans 8:34).

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
All creation joins to say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, O heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!
Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now your sting? Alleluia!
Dying once, He all doth save, Alleluia!
Where your victory, O grave? Alleluia!
Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids Him rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!
Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
 Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

Fourth Reading: Instruction
It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God (1 Peter 1:18–21).
If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins ... But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:14–17, 20–22).
So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God (Romans 7:4).
We know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence (2 Corinthians 4:14).
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory (Colossians 3:1–4).
Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him (2 Timothy 2:11–12).
(This video contains two songs, Jesus Saves and He Is Risen)
Hear the heart of heaven beating
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
And the hush of mercy breathing
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
Hear the host of angels sing
 “Glory to the newborn King”
 And the sounding joy repeating
 Jesus saves

See the humblest hearts adore Him
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
And the wisest bow before Him
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
See the sky alive with praise
 Melting darkness in its blaze
 There is light forevermore
 Jesus saves

He will live, our sorrow sharing
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
He will die our burden bearing
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
“It is done!” will shout the cross
 Christ has paid redemption’s cost
 While the empty tomb’s declaring
 Jesus saves

 Freedom’s calling
 Chains are falling
 Hope is dawning
 Bright and true
 Day is breaking
 Night is quaking
God is making all things new
 Jesus saves

Oh, to Christ, how great a debtor
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
Are the saints who shout together
 Jesus saves, Jesus saves
Rising up so fast and strong
 Lifting up salvation’s song
 The redeemed will sing forever
Jesus saves
Lyrics: Travis Cottell
Music: William J. Kirkpatrick
He Is Risen
Hear the bells ringing
They’re singing that you can be born again
 Hear the bells ringing
They’re singing Christ is risen from the dead

The angel up on the tombstone
Said He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell His disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead

Joy to the world, He has risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah

 Hear the bells ringing
They’re singing that you can be healed right now
Hear the bells ringing, they’re singing
Christ, He will reveal it now

The angels, they all surround us
And they are ministering Jesus’ power
Quickly now, reach out and receive it
For this could be your glorious hour

Joy to the world, He has risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah, hallelujah

The angel up on the tombstone
Said He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell His disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead

Joy to the world, He has risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah
 He’s risen, hallelujah
Hallelujah

Fifth Reading: Beyond
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way (Ephesians 1:17–23).
I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders… He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb…
And they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:2–10).
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” (Revelation 5:11–13).
Agnus Dei (Worthy Is the Lamb)
Alleluia
 Alleluia
For the Lord God Almighty reigns

 Alleluia
 Alleluia
For the Lord God Almighty reigns

 Alleluia
 Holy
Holy are You, Lord God Almighty
 Worthy is the Lamb
 Worthy is the Lamb

 You are holy
Holy are You, Lord God Almighty
 Worthy is the Lamb
 Worthy is the Lamb

Amen
