共観福音書^[1] はすべて、イエスと弟子たちとの最後の交流と、それに続くイエスの昇天の話で締めくくられています。本記事とこれに続くいくつかの記事で、それを福音書ごとに見ていきたいと思います。

マタイによる福音書

さて、十一人の弟子たちはガリラヤに行って、イエスが彼らに行くように命じられた山に登った。そして、イエスに会って拝した。しかし、疑う者もいた。^[2]

この福音書の少し前のほうには、「マグダラのマリヤとほかのマリヤ」 とがイエスの墓へ行ったところ、そこで天使に会い、そしてさらにイエスから、「行って兄弟たちに、ガリラヤに行け、そこでわたしに会えるであろう、と告げなさい」 ^[3] と言われたことが書かれています。イエスの死後、エルサレムに残っていた11人の弟子たち（イエスを裏切ったユダを除いた使徒たち）は、言われたとおりに、北方のガリラヤへと向かいました。彼らの行き先は、「イエスが彼らに行くように命じられた山」 です。この山の名前は書かれておらず、ガリラヤのどこにあるのかもわかりませんが、明らかに、イエスが弟子たちに与えた情報から、彼らはどこへ行くべきかを知っていました。

ガリラヤの山に着いた弟子たちは、イエスに会って拝しました。少し前の箇所では、女性たちがイエスに会った時、イエスを拝したとあり、同じことを弟子たちがここでしています。ある著者は、この点について、次のように書いています。「『拝する』とは、地上での宣教活動の間、弟子たちにとってかけがえのない存在であったイエスが死よりも強く、生き返られたのだと気づいたことに伴う自然な反応でした。」 ^[4]

ほとんどの者はイエスを拝しましたが、中には「疑う者もいた」とあります。11人の中には、確信が持てず、ためらう者たちがいたのです。それは、自分の目の前にいるのが実際にイエスであると確信できなかったという意味かもしれません。福音書の他の箇所には、弟子たちがイエスに気づかなかった時のことが書かれています。「彼らの目がさえぎられて、イエスを認めることができなかった。」 ^[5] 「一緒に食卓につかれたとき、パンを取り、祝福してさき、彼らに渡しておられるうちに、彼らの目が開けて、それがイエスであることがわかった。すると、み姿が見えなくなった。」 ^[6] 「夜が明けたころ、イエスが岸に立っておられた。しかし弟子たちはそれがイエスだとは知らなかった。」 ^[7]

イエスは彼らに近づいてきて言われた、「わたしは、天においても地においても、いっさいの権威を授けられた。」 ^[8]

「彼らに近づいて」とあるので、イエスは弟子たちから少し離れたところにおられたことがわかります。11人と話ができるよう、彼らに近づかれたのでしょう。イエスは先ず、ご自身は復活されることによって、彼らがよく知っているような巡回伝道者とも、癒しや奇跡を行う者ともかなり違った存在になられたことを告げられました。「天においても地においても、いっさいの権威を」 という言葉は、ダニエル7章14節を思い出させます。「彼に主権と光栄と国とを賜い、諸民、諸族、諸国語の者を彼に仕えさせた。その主権は永遠の主権であって、なくなることがなく、その国は滅びることがない。」

イエスはマタイの福音書で、人の子による将来の統治について、ダニエル7章13–14節にある言葉を用いて語っておられます。

「よく聞いておくがよい、人の子が御国の力をもって来るのを見るまでは、死を味わわない者が、ここに立っている者の中にいる。」 ^[9]

イエスは彼らに言われた、「よく聞いておくがよい。世が改まって、人の子がその栄光の座につく時には、わたしに従ってきたあなたがたもまた、十二の位に座してイスラエルの十二の部族をさばくであろう。」 ^[10]

「そのとき、人の子のしるしが天に現れるであろう。またそのとき、地のすべての民族は嘆き、そして力と大いなる栄光とをもって、人の子が天の雲に乗って来るのを、人々は見るであろう。また、彼は大いなるラッパの音と共に御使たちをつかわして、天のはてからはてに至るまで、四方からその選民を呼び集めるであろう。」 ^[11]

「人の子が栄光の中にすべての御使たちを従えて来るとき、彼はその栄光の座につくであろう。そして、すべての国民をその前に集めて、羊飼が羊とやぎとを分けるように、彼らをより分け、羊を右に、やぎを左におくであろう。そのとき、王は右にいる人々に言うであろう、『わたしの父に祝福された人たちよ、さあ、世の初めからあなたがたのために用意されている御国を受けつぎなさい。』」 ^[12]

イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたの言うとおりである。しかし、わたしは言っておく。あなたがたは、間もなく、人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう。」 ^[13]

天と地のいっさいの権威を授けられていると告げた後、イエスは弟子たちに、次のような指示を与えられました。

「それゆえに、あなたがたは行って、すべての国民を弟子として、父と子と聖霊との名によって、彼らにバプテスマを施し、 あなたがたに命じておいたいっさいのことを守るように教えよ。見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである。」 ^[14]

イエスは、その権威がどのように行使されるかについては特に語らず、ただそれが弟子たちにとって何を意味するのかを告げられました。彼らと話しているのは復活のキリスト、神の子であり、神のいっさいの権威を授かっている方なので、「行って…弟子と」する権限を弟子たちに与えることができたのです。彼らの仕事とは、イエスの生涯と死と復活について皆に知らせ、さらに、信じた者たちを教え訓練することであり、それによって、その人たちもまた世界中にメッセージを伝えることができるようにすることです。

マタイの福音書に書かれた、イエスの最後の言葉とは、「見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである」 というものでした。弟子たちは最善をつくしてイエスに従うにあたり、自分ひとりでそうするわけではなく、イエスが共におられるのだという最終的な約束で、この福音書は締めくくられているのです。ある著者は、それを次のように説明しています。

マタイの記すイエスは、パレスチナの取るに足りない人物ではなく、弟子たちがどこにいようと共にいてくださる力強きお方です。そして、いつまでもそうしてくださると言います。1世紀の弟子たちと一時的に共にいるということではなく、時の終わりまで弟子たちと共におられると言うのです。この福音書は、イエスが来られたことによって、神はその民と共におられるのだという保証 （マタイ1章23節）で始まり、イエス・キリストが絶えることなく忠実な弟子たちと共におられるという約束で締めくくられています。…イエスは世の終わりまで、時の終わりまで、彼らと共におられるのです。^[15]
